The use of felted footwear has been known for millennia, felt shoes have been found in Iron Age Siberian burials. The origin of valenki has been speculated to trace back to the traditional felt boots worn by nomads of the Great Steppe (including Southern Rus’).
Felt origins: Felt is the oldest known fabric, and it’s believed to have been discovered by ancient nomadic tribes who agitated and moistened sheep’s wool.
Felt slipper skills: The skills to make felt slippers originated in Russia in the late 18th century.
First factory: The first factory to make felt slippers opened in Finland in 1897 with Russian technical assistance.
Traditional colors: Felt slippers are traditionally made in red, dark blue, grey, and white.
Current production: Today, only a few family-owned companies still make felt slippers.
Felt is a durable, natural fabric that’s resistant to wear and tearing. It’s also an excellent insulator for temperature and sound. Felt can be made from natural or synthetic fibers, but it’s most commonly made from wool.
